In our continuing series, Laura Heatherley talks to Graham Burton, Deputy Scout Organiser for Charnwood 2006.
For poor Graham Burton it was a case of wrong place wrong time, "I only rang the other scout organiser Andy to ask if he and his family wished to share a New Year holiday with mine." And look where he ended up- Deputy Scout Organiser for Charnwood 2006.
Graham's fondest memory of Charnwood was watching the loo lorry leave and thinking "Thank goodness I've not got to empty so many tomorrow." No wonder this time he's looking forward to lying on the floor, looking up at the stars and just enjoying what's going on around him. He'll deserve the lie down after the months of planning and preparation he has ahead of him.
His favourite biscuit is "Malted milk as they have pictures of cows grazing in fields, which reminds me of the tranquility of the Charnwood 2006 campsite before and after," before conservatively adding "During camp I will be eating assorted biscuits, different tastes and all very special in their own way."
Is this his analogy for Charnwoods past? "Charnwoods are all different in their particular way, yet the same, with the aim being enjoyment and friendship. What's gone before has been fantastic, this will be hard for us to measure up against."
But surely it will? With so many fantastic (and currently very secretive) plans in the pipeline, Charnwood 2006 looks set to be well worth saving up for.
"It's the same as before, and different, its at Long Whatton, activities are huge, the site is huge, and the fun- just massive!
"I'm sure, with the whole team we can achieve a terrific time for the young people and adults alike, a time to remember. They'll be able to take the experiences and stories to be told many times over in the future. I love meeting so many like minded people and then being recognised over the next few years and saying 'you were at Charnwood too!'"
Graham hopes all scouts and guides who wish to come to Charnwood '06 have the opportunity and is sure all those who attend will have a great time.
