Sheila Lickess

Laura, our intrepid Spotlight reporter, talks to Leicestershire’s very own Guide County Commissioner: Sheila Lickess.

Sheila Lickess has held a variety of different roles since she first got bitten by the Guiding bug. She started off as a parent on a rota at her local Guide unit back in 1992, “but I couldn’t remember which week I was supposed to be there so ended up helping every week,” she says. “I then became a Unit Helper and, when I had completed my leadership qualification, an Assistant Guider. I have since been a District Commissioner, Division Commissioner and County Chair of Adult Support before being appointed as County Commissioner.”

As for Charnwood experience, she has plenty. Sheila visited for the day in 1991, assisted the Quarter Master in 1996 when she camped with her Division, and she camped as an Assistant Guider with her unit in 2001, so she definitely knows what Charnwood is all about.

When asked what she is most looking forward to about Charnwood 2006, Sheila says; “meeting all the young people from the UK and our international visitors, seeing them having fun and making friends.”

At the camp she will be on the PR team, helping to show invited guests around the campsite. This will also be an excellent way for her to get around the campsite and see what everyone is up to, and all the fun they are having.

When asked what her favourite activity to take part in is she says; “I prefer mental challenges to physical ones and really enjoy being creative. I like the activities where you are set a problem and have to work together as a team to solve it. I am looking forward to the Glice rink though.”

About Whatton House Sheila says ‘I think it is a wonderful location. The views are superb and we have plenty of space for all the activities we want to provide. I think it will be excellent.”

Finally, and most importantly Sheila made a shocking revelation when asked what her favourite biscuit is. “I am not generally a biscuit eater, prefering something like Bombay Mix. However if pushed would probably go for shortbread.” So she doesn’t like biscuits hmm? I think we can forgive her seeing as she works so hard as County Commissioner.
